If your life were to stand for one thing, what would you want that to be?
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. (Steve Jobs)
…
At one level or another, we all want to make a difference. We want our lives to be meaningful and to count for something. Many of us, however, are not sure how to do this.
There are numerous reasons why people have problems with meaning. As we grow up, we abandon or neglect childhood talents, dreams, and aspirations that would be meaningful in our adult lives. We get disconnected from our authenticity.
Some of us accept the identity and values that society, family, or friends have thrust upon us. We don’t stop to question whether those identities and values are a good fit; we may feel that it would be selfish or wrong not to embrace given roles.
Some of us search for meaning outside ourselves or wait for meaning to happen. For example, we wait for a change in circumstances, a sign, some sort of revelation or insight - to provide meaning in our lives. We don’t realize that we can create our own meaning right now.
In this day and age, people live very busy lives. We sometimes have a tendency to operate on automatic pilot rather than paying attention and being present. It’s also a lot of work to sit down with ourselves, determine our life’s purpose, and live that purpose intentionally. With so many responsibilities and so many things “to do,” we believe there just isn’t enough time to examine meaning.
All of the above reasons are quite understandable. Even so, it’s an important step in fully embracing life to think about what we want our lives to stand for, why we are here, how to create meaning.
In my coaching and on this blog, I want to help you live the life you are meant to live. I want to help you:
-
Follow your intuition and your heart’s desire
-
Reclaim your unlived life
-
Be present
-
Free yourself from a sense of stuckness or stagnation
-
Connect with joy
-
Determine and live your life’s purpose
Normally we do not like to think about death. We would rather think about life. Why reflect on death? When you start preparing for death, you soon realize that you must look into your life now … and come to face the truth of your self. Death is like a mirror in which the true meaning of life is reflected. (Sogyal Rinpoche)
